Frequently Asked Questions
Epoxy Flooring Questions
How much would it cost to epoxy 1,000 square feet?
HomeGuide's national range for installed epoxy is $4 to $10 per square foot, which works out to about $4,000 to $10,000 for 1,000 square feet. Polyaspartic runs $5 to $12 per square foot, or about $5,000 to $12,000. Crack repair, old coating removal and the finish you pick move the total, so we price it after seeing the slab.
How much does a 1,500 sq ft epoxy floor cost?
At HomeGuide's $4 to $10 per square foot, 1,500 square feet comes to roughly $6,000 to $15,000. Large floors are often shops or commercial spaces, and HomeAdvisor lists heavy-duty 100% solids commercial coatings at $12 or more per square foot. Your written estimate sets the actual price.
What is the downside of epoxy flooring?
HomeGuide lists several: a narrow application temperature range, long cure times, brittleness in extreme temperatures, and a slick surface when wet. Standard epoxy also has poor to fair UV resistance and can yellow in sunlight. We handle these with grinding, texture in the topcoat, early-morning installs and a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat where the sun reaches.
Does epoxy hold up in Las Cruces summer heat?
A well-bonded system holds up, but heat affects installation more than the finished floor. Epoxy should be applied in roughly the 60°F to 85°F range, so we work early on hot days. Thin store-kit coatings can also lift under hot tires, which is one reason we build a thicker system over ground concrete.
Can you coat a garage floor that has cracks?
Yes, if the cracks have stopped moving. We fill and grind them flush first. A crack that keeps opening, or a slab that has dropped, can come back through any coating, and in parts of Las Cruces collapsible soils are a known cause, so we point those out before quoting.
How long before I can drive on a new garage floor?
HomeGuide says to avoid driving on epoxy for 2 to 7 days, while polyaspartic is ready for heavy vehicle traffic in about 24 to 48 hours. We give you a specific time for your floor based on the product and the temperature that day.
Garage Floor Coating Questions
How much does it cost to coat a two-car garage in Las Cruces?
HomeGuide's national range for a two-car garage is about $1,600 to $5,800 for epoxy and $2,000 to $6,900 for polyaspartic. Removing an old coating, filling a lot of cracks or choosing a full flake finish moves the price. We give you a written number after seeing the floor.
Will a garage floor coating get hot tire pickup?
Hot tire pickup mostly happens with thin coatings that never bonded well. Grinding the slab and building a thicker system with a durable topcoat is how we prevent it. Letting the floor cure fully before parking also matters.
How long until I can park on my coated garage floor?
HomeGuide says to keep vehicles off epoxy for 2 to 7 days, while polyaspartic is ready for vehicle traffic in about 24 to 48 hours. We give you a time for your floor based on the product and that day's temperature.
Is a coated garage floor slippery?
A smooth gloss finish can be slick when wet, for example when monsoon rain drips off a car. Flake floors have built-in texture, and we can add anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat on solid colors.
Can you coat over my existing garage paint?
We remove it first. Paint and thin kit coatings are only as strong as their own bond to the concrete, so anything we put on top would fail when they do. Grinding takes them off and opens the slab.
Epoxy Flake Floors Questions
Is a flake floor more slippery than plain epoxy?
Less. The chips leave a slight texture under the topcoat, especially with a full broadcast. If you want more grip, an anti-slip additive can go in the final coat.
How much more does a flake floor cost?
HomeGuide lists decorative flakes and custom colors as adding about $0.50 to $2.00 per square foot to a polyaspartic floor. On a two-car garage that is often a few hundred dollars to around a thousand. Your written quote shows the exact figure.
Do flake floors hide dust and dirt?
Yes, that is one of their main advantages. The speckled pattern hides fine grit and small marks between cleanings, which helps in a place with windy, dusty springs.
Will the flakes fade in the sun?
The topcoat is what protects them. Standard epoxy has poor to fair UV resistance and can yellow, so we usually seal flake floors with a polyaspartic clear coat that HomeGuide rates excellent for UV.
Polyaspartic Floor Coating Questions
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy for a sunny garage?
For UV exposure, yes. HomeGuide rates polyaspartic excellent for UV resistance and epoxy poor to fair, so a polyaspartic topcoat is less likely to yellow near an open door. Epoxy still works well as a base coat underneath.
How fast can I use a polyaspartic floor?
HomeGuide says it is dry to the touch within a few hours and ready for heavy vehicle traffic in 24 to 48 hours. We confirm timing for your floor based on the temperature that day.
Why does polyaspartic cost more?
The material costs more and the fast set takes a skilled crew working in small batches. HomeGuide puts it at $5 to $12 per square foot installed, compared with $4 to $10 for epoxy.
Can polyaspartic go down in summer?
Yes. HomeGuide lists an application range up to 140°F. Heat makes it set faster, though, so we still start early to give the crew time to spread it evenly.
Patio & Pool Deck Coatings Questions
Can epoxy be used on an outdoor patio in Las Cruces?
Plain epoxy is a poor fit for full sun because it has poor to fair UV resistance and can yellow. We use UV-stable polyaspartic or polyurea systems, or acrylic-based deck coatings, for exposed outdoor concrete.
What coating keeps a pool deck cooler?
HomeGuide describes cool deck coatings as a non-slip material that lowers surface temperatures, at about $4 to $6 per square foot. Light colors also help. Dark finishes get hot in summer sun.
How much does it cost to coat a pool deck?
HomeGuide lists pool deck resurfacing at about $1,500 to $10,800 for 500 to 900 square feet, depending on the finish. Cool deck coatings run about $4 to $6 per square foot. Repairs to cracked or settled concrete add to that.
Will a coating fix the cracks in my patio?
We fill cracks before coating, and the coating covers the repair. If a section has settled or a crack keeps moving, it can show through again. We point those out at the estimate.
Concrete Crack & Floor Repair Questions
Can you repair cracks without coating the floor?
Yes, but the repairs will show as patches on bare concrete. Most people pair crack repair with a coating so the finished floor looks uniform.
Why does my Las Cruces slab keep cracking?
Shrinkage causes some cracking in all slabs. In the Las Cruces area, collapsible soils that settle when wet are another known cause, according to the New Mexico Bureau of Geology. Check irrigation and drainage near the slab, because water is the usual trigger.
Will a crack come back through a new coating?
A crack that has stopped moving usually stays hidden once it is filled and coated. One that is still opening will likely reflect through any coating. We tell you which kind you have before quoting.
How much does it cost to fix a garage floor crack?
HomeAdvisor lists crack and chip patching at about $25 to $250. A floor with many cracks or heavy surface damage may need resurfacing, which HomeGuide puts at $3 to $7 per square foot.
Commercial & Shop Floor Epoxy Questions
How much does commercial epoxy flooring cost?
HomeAdvisor lists heavy-duty 100% solids commercial coatings at $12 or more per square foot. Lighter-duty spaces can fall within residential ranges of $4 to $12. Prep for oil-soaked or damaged slabs adds to the total.
Can you coat our floor without closing the business?
Often, yes. We can phase the floor in sections or work over a weekend with a fast-curing polyaspartic topcoat. We plan the schedule with you before the quote is final.
Will epoxy hold up to forklifts?
A thick 100% solids system over properly ground concrete is built for that kind of traffic. Thin water-based coatings are not, which is why we do not use them on work floors.
How long does a commercial floor coating last?
HomeGuide gives solid epoxy a life of 10 to 20 years, with commercial use often on the shorter end. Recoating worn traffic lanes extends the life of the full system.
